Miami Open 2022: Brandon Nakashima vs. Soonwoo Kwon Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Brandon as Nakashima takes on Soonwoo Kwon in the first round on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022.

Brandon Nakashima will face a player built in same mold as him in Soonwoo Kwon in the first round at the Miami Open. Neither player is in great form this year, but this is chance for one of them to bounce back from recent defeats.

Brandon Nakashima and Soonwoo Kwon are just three years apart. And both of them are accelerating up the rankings on the men’s tour. For Nakashima, last year was a breakthrough season for him which culminated with a place in the final eight at the Next Gen ATP Finals. His two titles on the Challenger Tour in Brest and Quimper helped his cause towards a Top 100 entry. He also got a taste of what felt like to play in tour-level finals, finishing runner-up at successive tournaments in Los Cabos and Atlanta. However, Nakashima hasn’t lived up the expectations thus far in 2022. He has lost seven matches and comes to the Miami Open low in confidence.

Soonwoo Kwon, for his part, has also been disappointing. Last year he won a maiden ATP title in Nur Sultan, but a return of just seven wins from eight main draws does not make for good reading for a man with aspirations to reach the Top 50 in the not too distant future. Kwon has not won back-to-back matches at any ATP event this season, and his defeat to Laslo Djere in Indian Wells was unexpected. Will he turn his season around at the Miami Open?

Brandon Nakashima and Soonwoo Kwon have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the Miami Open will be their first official meeting. This was supposed to be a big season for both players, but they are picking some valuable learning despite their underwhelming start to the year. Nakashima and Kwon have immense power and the ability to inject pace in rallies at will. So this could turn into a big-hitting contest right from the off. It is hard to pick in this one, but I will side with the higher-ranked Kwon here who has dealt with much tougher opposition this season.

Free Tennis Pick and Prediction: Soonwoo Kwon to win in 3 sets.
