TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Casper Ruud (3) meets Pablo Andujar in the Semi-finals on Friday, May 21st, 2021.
Will Pablo Andujar continue to improve on his recent run of form here at the 2021 Geneva Open to make his way to his first Final in a very long time? Will Casper Ruud continue to dominate on clay this year, making the late stages of yet another tournament? This is a battle of youth vs experience, and only one will make their way to the Final. Who will it be?
Pablo Andujar had to come back from a set down against the 18-year-old, Dominic Stricker, in the Quarter-finals, eventually winning the match 4-6/6-4/6-4. I think Dominic’s style of aggressive play right from the start caught Pablo Andujar off guard, but he was eventually able to get into his rhythm and change the momentum of the match. Pablo Andujar has been in great form all week here, and he will have a lot of confidence in his ability to make to the Final here. However, the 35-year-old Spaniard will have to ensure he is at his absolute best as he now meets an opponent who has gone 13-4 all season on clay in Casper Ruud.
Casper Ruud also had to come back from a set down in the Quarter-finals, beating the unpredictable Dominik Koepfer in 3 sets 2-6/6-1/6-4. Casper Ruud has been incredible on clay all season, and a first title of the season is so close for him now. Casper Ruud has been in the best form on clay out of anyone else remaining in the tournament draw this season, and I am sure he will want to continue this amazing run of form to beat the likes of Pablo Andujar on Friday. However, Pablo has a lot of confidence this week and he also has a lot of experience. Therefore, Ruud needs to be at his absolute best.
Casper Ruud and Pablo Andujar have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They met recently in March at the Argentina Open, where Ruud won in straight sets 6-2/6-3. Pablo is a very experienced player who will always try and use his experience to find an edge, however, nowadays these young guns like Ruud run these smaller ATP 250 tournaments. Casper Ruud is powerful, fast, and also very experienced on clay at a young age. I see this being a tight match as is the Semi-final of the 2021 Geneva Open, but I still see the young Norwegian coming through on top.
