TennisSection previews the 2021 Davis Cup Finals as Reilly Opelka takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the Round Robin stage on Friday, November 26th, 2021.
Will Lorenzo Sonego give the Italian crowd something to cheer about as he aims to get a good win under his belt? Will Reilly Opelka start the day off strongly for Team USA as they aim to get a head start here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals? Both players have attributes better than the other, but who’s game is going to get the job done here?
Lorenzo Sonego will be very determined to come out here and give Italian fans something to cheer about as he aims to get the first win under their belt. Lorenzo has a great game, with a solid serve, and amazing flamboyant game which is hard to read. Lorenzo has had a lot of success before in tournaments against big players, beating Novak Djokovic in Vienna in 2019, nearly beating Novak in Rome this year, and he will want to show us that type of tennis here as well. However, his main success has come on clay courts, and here in indoor hard court conditions, he will need to ensure his return game is at its best as he meets the huge server in Reilly Opelka at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals.
Reilly Opelka had a very good year this year, winning some big matches against big players, and showing us the evolution of his game. A year or two ago, Reilly’s game was heavily reliant on just his serve, and when the ball was returned, more often than not, he would lose the point. However, the American has focused a lot on his movement and forehand in recent times and this has allowed him to make it further than usual into tournaments, such as his Toronto Final this year. Reilly knows that Team Italy will be hard to beat, so he will know that if he can beat Lorenzo Sonego early on here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, he would put Team USA in a strong place.
Reilly Opelka and Lorenzo Sonego have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. When you look at just statistics alone for 2021, Lorenzo looks to have had a better year, winning 28 matches, losing 23, and winning a title. This, compared to Reilly who has won 21 matches, lost 22, and not won a title this year. However, the vast majority of the wins for Lorenzo came early on in the year in clay court conditions and since the Rome Masters, he has not had much success. Reilly on the other hand, struggled in the first half of the year, and has shown great composure in getting himself back to his best and even better in the last 3-4 months. I expect a tight match and an entertaining one here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals. However, the American’s serve should be too much for the Italian.
