Will Alexander Zverev get the win? Will Casper Ruud pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two top ATP players coming to a clash. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Paris Masters?
Alexander Zverev got a tough win over Dimitrov to set up this meeting with Casper Ruud. He needed 3 sets, and at times he definitely didn’t play as well as he would have liked. However, at the end he managed to save a break point at 2-3 and storm back in the last set to take it 6-3. He’s a good matchup for Ruud, and I definitely expect him to get through this one. Ruud has been improving constantly, but he has always struggled against the guys at the very top like Zverev. They play sort of similar games, but Zverev is a much bigger guy and has a much bigger game, allowing him to have a much faster serve and a much better return on top of that. When you have two guys who do similar things, but one of those guys does them better, then it’s a very slanted matchup, it’s similar to a Federer vs. Dimitrov matchup or a Nadal vs. Almagro, or Djokovic vs. Monfils. I expect Zverev to get the win and continue his great momentum to the semifinals at the 2021 Paris Masters.
Casper Ruud got a solid win over Giron to set up a really tough meeting with Alexander Zverev. Zverev has been in incredible form since he won gold at the Olympics, and to stop him in Paris would be an incredible feat. He’s been playing some solid tennis, but he has not improved enough to be able to take on Zverev. Zverev has been shaky lately, so Ruud may be able to make inroads in some of the sets, especially if Zverev’s serving is off, but ultimately, I expect Zverev to return aggressively and take the win in two relatively straightforward sets to book his spot in the final four at the 2021 Paris Masters.
Alexander Zverev and Capser Ruud have met once before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting game in Cincinnati this year, with Zverev easily sweeping him to take it 6-1 6-3. I expect Zverev to win in straights again, but this time Ruud will definitely put up a fight. This court is playing slower, which does make it easier for Ruud to play aggressively. However, Zverev just plays a much bigger game, and considering how much better he serves, if Ruud doesn’t put on a clinic on his own serve, Zverev will likely be able to capitalize on that easily to take the win and move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Paris Masters.
