TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16 on Thursday, October 28th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe get another win against Stefanos Tsitsipas this year as he continues to perform at a high level on the ATP Tour? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get revenge for his loss to the American earlier this year at Wimbledon? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Vienna Open. Who will it be?
Frances Tiafoe put on a solid performance in his opening round match, beating the Serbian, Dusan Lajovic, in 2 sets 6-4/6-4. Frances was very good on his first serve, winning 82% of points, and he was above average on his second serve. Tiafoe had many chances to go ahead in the match, but he only converted 3/11 break points, which if he had converted a couple more, he would have won with even more dominance. Frances has been putting on some solid performances in the second half of 2021, and he will want to recreate his best one as he once again meets Stefanos Tsitsipas, but now at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas had to fight his way through a tight opening match against the determined and in form Grigor Dimitrov, beating the Bulgarian in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Dimitrov had a few set points in the first set, but he was not able to convert them, and after that, the pressure just started piling on him as Tsitsipas began to play better. If Dimitrov was perhaps 5-10% better in the match, he would have won, but Tsitsipas maintained his composure and played great. Tsitsipas will want to go far into the next few tournaments this year as he aims to be ready for the ATP Finals, but he now meets the tough Frances Tiafoe at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe have met 4 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 3-1. They met 2 times this year, with Tiafoe winning in Wimbledon and Tsitsipas winning at the Tokyo Olympics. I expect a tight match here as they both know their games quite well now, and the fact that Tiafoe has nothing to lose, especially after seeing Tsitsipas having to fight a lot in his opening match, he will give it his best. Tiafoe is capable of causing the upset, but I think that Stefanos Tsitsipas gets back up after a tough match quickly and he will be ready to get himself into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Vienna Open.
