Will Botic van de Zandschulp win on home soil? Or Will Emil Ruusuvuori put the cat amongst the pigeons? This should be a tricky opener for the home favorite who will be keen to leave a lasting impression at the Libema Open. Who will prevail?
Botic van de Zandschulp is quickly becoming a household name in the Netherlands. The 26-year-old was one of the top-performing players during the recently-concluded clay-court swing, scoring an impressive 10 wins on the surface. In that span he reached his maiden ATP final in Munich and was unfortunate he could not complete the match due to chest pains. It has taken some of the world’s best to stop him in the past few weeks including Casper Ruud in Rome and Rafael Nadal at the French Open. The Dutchman will be making his main draw debut at the Libema Open and should be the strong favorite to take down Emil Ruusuvuori.
Emil Ruusuvuori, for his part, was on the receiving end of some brutal draws on the dirt. He went 9-7 on the surface in the past couple of months, losing three times to top 10 players and twice to clay-court specialists in Holger Rune and Cristian Garin. The fact that he managed to post nine wins is indeed a decent return. The Finn is putting together the best season of his career on the main tour, and with half of the season gone, he is looking every inch as good to break the Top 50 for the remaining six months of the calendar.
Botic van de Zandschulp and Emil Ruusuvuori have not played on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Libema Open will be their first official meeting. Ruusuvuori is no slouch when it comes to grinding out his opponents and tennis matches. But with crowd advantage on his side and being in slightly better form, van de Zandschulp should stamp his authority at his home tournament.
