TennisSection previews the Miami Open 2022 as Daniil Medvedev takes on Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 31st, 2022.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Hubert Hurkacz pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have the man looking to reclaim the top spot on the ATP rankings taking on the defending champions. Who will triumph and move on to the semifinals at the Miami Open 2022?
Daniil Medvedev got a great win over Jenson Brooksby at the Miami Open, struggling in the first set to almost fall down a double break at 1-3 15-40, before turning it around to take it 7-5 and storm through to the quarterfinals where he will face Hubert Hurkacz, the defending champion. Hurkacz won’t make it easy for Medvedev, but Daniil hit a very solid ball out there today, and I doubt Hurkacz can match the excellence of his consistency and aggression as the top seed aims to top the ATP Tour once again and book himself a spot in the semifinals of the Miami Open 2022.
Hubert Hurkacz got an interesting win, playing a sloppy first set but still winning it 7-6, and then putting away an injured Harris 6-2 in the 2nd at the Miami Open. If he doesn’t keep up his level the whole time, he has no chance. Medvedev has shown that he’s playing at a high level here and he won’t give him an inch. Hurkacz will have to be the aggressor here, making sure he serves real big which he is capable of doing and making sure to not allow Medvedev to dig into those rallies and slowly dictate them. Let’s see if the defending champion has what it takes to keep his hopes alive of a title defense at the Miami Open 2022.
Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz have met 3 times before this match at the Miami Open, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 2-1. Their first meeting came at Wimbledon, with Hurkacz winning in 5. While the match had strange circumstances, you can’t deny that Hurkacz knows how to play Medvedev, having also taken the 1st set both the other times they played on hard courts. Medvedev though is able to take advantage quite easily when his opponent isn’t in top form, and I am not entirely confident that he’ll be able to stay in the points long enough to push the guy who will top the ATP Tour once more with a spot in the semifinals at the Miami Open 2022.
