Frances Tiafoe and Aslan Karatsev will be playing for the first time on the ATP Tour. It’s a fascinating matchup, with both players able to play some beautiful offensive tennis. It’s fair to say that if Karatsev is able to maintain his level, the slow conditions in Paris will favor his game.

Aslan Karatsev came through the qualifiers, and he’s easily one of the most dangerous qualifiers in the main draw. Frances Tiafoe can play on the dirt, but he should be very careful coming into this match against the Russian. Karatsev has massive groundstrokes, able to fire both his forehand and backhand from anywhere on the court, and I fully expect him to take advantage of the slower conditions which I do not expect to do Tiafoe any favors. Tiafoe will need to hope Karatsev cools down and starts leaking more unforced errors, or else I expect Karatsev to pull off the upset and progress to the third round.
