Casper Ruud has been in great form in 2021, making a name for himself and finally establishing himself as a top 10 player. Casper’s game has really evolved into not just being a clay courter, as he is now able to get really far into most tournaments he enters. Casper Ruud will be extremely proud of his end to last season where he was able to reach the Semi-Finals of the ATP Finals beating the likes of Rublev and Norrie along the way. Ruud will be happy that Novak Djokovic is not playing as he now has a chance to get something going for his country. Will Casper be able to come out here at the 2022 ATP Cup and get a solid win straight away against Dusan Lajovic?
Dusan Lajovic started off 2021 strongly with some good wins under his belt, even beating the World No.2, Daniil Medvedev at one point. However, since April or so, Dusan has been very sub par and he has been losing in most tournaments in the opening round. Dusan went 18-28 in his wins and losses in 2021, and he will be hoping to improve drastically in 2022. However, he is now the no.1 player for Team Serbia here at the 2022 ATP Cup due to Novak not playing, so he will have to face even tougher opponents like Casper Ruud.
Casper Ruud and Dusan Lajovic have met 2 times before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 2-0. They met last year at the Toronto Masters where Ruud cruised through that match in straight sets 6-4/6-3. If this was Novak playing, Ruud would definitely lose, but because Lajovic has been thrown into the mix as the no.1 player for Serbia at the 2022 ATP Cup, I think that Casper will be very happy. Dusan is experienced, but he hasn’t played too well as of the last few months and Ruud has been on fire. This is an easy choice to kick things off at the 2022 ATP Cup.
