TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Botic van de Zandschulp takes on David Goffin in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022.
Will Botic van de Zandschulp get the win? Will David Goffin pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have a player in great form taking on a popular player on his comeback trail. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Madrid Open?
Botic van de Zandschulp played an epic today, taking down Spanish hometown hero Pablo Carreno Busta saving 3 match points. With his excellent run in Munich last week as well, it will be quite the challenge for the Belgian. Van de Zandschulp took down Casper Ruud and Miomir Kecmanovic back to back, but did have to retire in the finals of that tournament. With another marathon match played, his fitness may be called into question as Goffin isn’t looking bad himself, but I expect Botic to get the win and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Madrid Open.
David Goffin took down Aslan Karatsev, while it may not be a very notable win considering the losing streak Karatsev is on, it’s still a big name win and Goffin has just been piling up the wins comparatively to the last couple of seasons. To take down Botic van de Zandschulp though will be quite the task, van de Zandschulp has backed up his performance at the US Open last year, and I expect him to continue that form as he looks to reach the next stages of the 2022 Madrid Open.
Botic van de Zandschulp and David Goffin have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Van de Zandschulp is a massive hitter, I think the conditions in Madrid are perfect for him. For Goffin, I don’t love the matchup for him but Goffin at his best can certainly contend with these guys seeing as he plays a very aggressive brand of tennis. He’s been more conservative though, so even if he can push van de Zandschulp, in the end it’ll be victory for the Dutchman as he aims to book his spot in the last 16 at the 2022 Madrid Open.
