Casper Ruud hasn’t had the clay season everyone has necessarily expected him to have, losing early in Monte Carlo and then going on to blow match points against PCB in Barcelona, then losing early in Estoril. These top guys always regroup though, and I expect him to do so here in Madrid. He’s been improving on hard courts, and Madrid plays more like a hard court compared to any other clay court, so I think he can adapt well to the conditions here although he will also prefer a slower clay court like many other players. Let’s see if he can take down Dusan Lajovic and get a good start off to his campaign at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Dusan Lajovic got a solid win against Borna Coric, but only to set up a much tougher meeting coming up against the No. 5 seed Casper Ruud. Ruud will be a very tough opponent to top, having been one of the players to beat on the clay for a couple of years now. Ruud can be flimsy at times, but for the most part he doesn’t disappoint, and when he’s expected to win, he usually does. Let’s see if Lajovic can stay in this one at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Casper Ruud and Dusan Lajovic have met three times before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 3-0. They’ve met a total of 3 times in the last couple of years, with one meeting on clay and the other 2 on hard courts. Ruud hasn’t dropped a set to Lajovic, and I don’t expect anything different for him here. His game is bigger, faster, and a lot more versatile and suited for the clay as he aims to take down Lajovic and book himself a place in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Madrid Open.
