TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Filip Krajinovic in the Round of 32 on Monday, October 11th, 2021.
Will Filip Krajinovic come out here and shock us all by defeating the in form US Open Champion? Will Daniil Medvedev continue to cruise through opponents as he aims to back up his US Open win with a strong win here in Indian Wells? Both players know each other quite well and have beaten each other before, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Indian Wells Open. Who will it be?
Filip Krajinovic came through a tight 2-set match against the in form American, Marco Giron, beating him 7-6/7-5. Filip Krajinovic on a normal day would have been expected to have won that match in 2 easy sets. However, as we are in America, and Marcos Giron has been in strong form, making his maiden career Semi-Final on the ATP Tour at the Sofia Open. However, at the end of the day, the experience and solid all round game from Filip Krajinovic allowed him to get the better of the American here. Krajinovic will be very happy, but he will know he faces the toughest player to beat now at Indian Wells, Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev has been in great form for the entire summer and this momentum is moving into the fall easily. Medvedev cruised through his first match here against the American, Mackenzie McDonald, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-2. Daniil Medvedev will know that if he continues to play like he has at the US Open and Laver Cup, he is the definite favourite for the title here and he should definitely win it. However, Medvedev now meets Filip Krajinovic who is able to keep things tight against him as we have seen before, and he will need to be at his best to ensure that the upset does not happen here at Indian Wells.
Daniil Medvedev and Filip Krajinovic have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They met last earlier this year at the Australian Open where Medvedev won in a 5-set match. Medvedev was dominating that match at the beginning, but he let his guard down and allowed Krajinovic to have comeback hopes. Comparing the Medvedev of then, to the Medvedev of now is very different. Medvedev has proven himself to be much more mentally focused and composed, which has allowed him to dominate and not let opponents see many opportunities to gain some momentum. Based on this, I don’t see Filip Krajinovic standing a chance here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
