TennisSection previews the 2022 Queens Open as Cameron Norrie takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the first round on Monday, June 13th, 2022.
Cameron Norrie will be looking to go one better this year at the Queens Open and hoist his first grass-court title of his career. But the Briton does not have an easy path to get there by any estimation. His first-round opponent Grigor Dimitrov is a former champion at this event and is one of the most elegant shot-makers on the grass. Who will prevail?
Cameron Norrie reached a maiden ATP final on grass at the Queens Open last season, but finished runner-up to MatteoBerrettini. That run served as a backbone for a respectable third-round showing at Wimbledon where he would lose to Roger Federer. Norrie has been known to excel on slow hard courts and clay owing to his high top spin forehand and the use of a flat backhand stroke. But what makes him even more dangerous is his versatility to adapt on any surface. So do not be surprised to see the Briton excel again in his least favorite surface.
Grigor Dimitrov, for his part, will be playing for the first time since losing to Diego Schwartzman in the third round of the French Open. The Bulgarian former World No. 3 has won the title at Queens before (in 2014), the same year he went on to make the Wimbledon semifinals. The 31-year-old will make his first visit since 2019 at an event he knows all too well. He has been in decent form this year, reaching the quarterfinals or better at four tournaments during the first half of the season.
Cameron Norrie owns a 2-0 winning record over GrigorDimitrov. Both matches were contested during the 2021 season on the North American hard courts. Norrie defeated the Bulgarian at the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open respectively. On grass, I would give the edge to Dimitrov. He has a lot of variety to neutralize Norrie’s biggest weapons. With both players playing for the first time on grass this season, Dimitrov’s prowess on the surface will be a huge factor in the outcome of this match.
