TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Aslan Karatsev (18) meets Jaume Munar in the First Round on Monday January 17th, 2022.
Aslan Karatsev returns to the scene of where he made his breakthrough on the ATP Tour, when he stunned the tennis world by reaching the Semi-Finals at the Australian Open 2019. He opens his campaign against veteran Spaniard Jaume Munar, in a match where he will be the overwhelming favorite to win. Can he repeat his feat and go on a deep run here at the 2022 Australian Open?
Aslan Karatsev of Russia is the 18th seed here at the 2022 Australian Open and is currently ranked #20 on the ATP Tour. The Russian has been one of the surprise packages on the tour over the past few seasons, seemingly coming out of nowhere to win his third title and first title of the year just last week in Sydney. Since then he has established himself as one of the best payers in the world, and has consistently performed well, especially on the hard courts with his huge baseline game. He enters this event in good form, and will be expecting to go on a deep run, but will first have to get past tricky veteran Jaume Munar.
Jaume Munar is unseeded here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked #72 in the world. The Spaniard is an 8 year veteran on the ATP Tour and has had a solid career. However, he is more well known for his clay court prowess and he is expected to struggle here, especially since his opponent Aslan Karatsev is a former Semi-Finalist here and is a top 20 player. Munar is very experienced and is a capable player, so if the Russian is not at his best he can take advantage. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen and he is the big underdog here.
This will be the second meeting between the players on the ATP Tour with Aslan Karatsev leading the head to head 1-0. He won their only match last year at the US Open, winning in four sets. Unfortunately for Jaume Munar, I expect to see a similar result here. Karatsev has way too much firepower for him to handle and should be able to comfortably wrap this one up. Munar won’t give it away, but expect the Russian to win here and advance to the Second Round of the 2022 Australian Open.
