TennisSection previews the 2022 Queens Open as Reilly Opelka takes on Alex De Minaur in the first round on Monday, June 13th, 2022.
Will Reilly Opelka serve his way to victory on his first outing on the grass at the Queens Open? Or will Alex De Minaur extend his winning streak over the American? This will be a clash of styles as the big serve of Opelka faces De Minaur’s electric feet. Who will prevail?
Reilly Opelka will be playing his bogey opponent Alex De Minaur on Monday. I am still amazed that Opelka hasn’t managed to solve the De Minaur puzzle in their last fourmeetings, losing each time. And strikingly, Opelka has lost a handful of tiebreaks in those matches, including their last clash in Basel. Opelka also has a negative win-loss record on the grass in his career, winning six matches from a possible 17. It defies logic considering that the American has the weaponry to excel on the surface. Could it change this season?
Alex De Minaur is not having the best of times. The Australian World No. 22 reached the semifinals at the Queens Open in his last trip last season, but there is very little to suggest he is bound to repeat those exploits this term. De Minaur has lost his last three matches on the trot, including his first-round match at the French Open against Hugo Gaston when he was a sizable favorite. Last week De Minaur was beaten by Adrian Mannarino on the grass courts of Den Bosch. After a fine start to the year on home soil, De Minaur’s campaign has been in the mire. Can he turn it around at Queens?
Alex De Minaur leads Reilly Opelka 4-0 in their-to-head meetings. Their last meeting took place in Basel in 2019 in which the Aussie won in three sets. De Minaur has the speed advantage while Opelka has the height advantage. I think De Minaur is due for an improved performance after a dismal run in recent weeks. But despite the fact that he is a perfect 4-0 against Opelka, none of those meetings have been routine. So expect the Aussie to have the edge again in another hard fought win.
