Taylor Fritz suffered another early defeat in his second tournament in a row, losing to Dutch wild card Tim Van Rijthoven at the Libema Open. Seven of Fritz’s nine defeats this season have come against opponents ranked lower than him in the rankings. Having lost to Bernabe Zapata Miralles at the French Open, the American big server is staring at the likelihood of tasting defeat for the third match running. That would represent his worst sequence of results this season, and ahead of Wimbledon, it would be damaging for his ambitions and momentum. Fritz will play the local hope Jack Draper in what will be a tricky opener for the fourth seed.
Jack Draper is among a handful of British names in the main draw at Queens Open. The 20-year-old from Sutton will be looking to put on a strong showing in front of the home crowd on Monday. Draper has enjoyed a successful year on the ATP Challenger Tour, winning four titles and cracking the world’s Top 100 for the first time. Draper reached the quarterfinals on his last appearance at this tournament, losing to compatriot Cameron Norrie. He would go to Wimbledon in fine spirits and famously stole a set off defending champion Novak Djokovic, but ultimately lost in four. That experience has clearly laid the foundation for Draper to enjoy more productive runs on the ATP’s second tier.
Taylor Fritz and Jack Draper have not played each other before this. Fritz, being the higher-ranked player, is the favorite in this match, but there is a cloud of doubt regarding his recent performances. He needs to bring his A-game at Queens because he will face a stiff opposition against Draper. The Briton is worth backing given his knack for producing his absolute best on home turf.
