TennisSection previews the 2023 Estoril Open first-round match featuring Diego Schwartzman vs Marco Cecchinato on Monday, April 3, 2023.
Schwartzman vs Cecchinato Match Preview
Diego Schwartzman will look for a fresh start at the Estoril Open. But he won’t have it easy against former Roland Garros semifinalist Marco Cecchinato. Who will prevail?
Diego Schwartzman is not shying away from the fact that 2023 has been one of the most difficult seasons of his career. He has been grappling to stay afloat among the world’s best while at the same tending to his ill father at one point. And if recent performances at the Miami Masters are anything to go by, Schwartzman should feel optimistic of turning his fortunes around. He’ll look to start things on a clean slate at the Estoril Open on his debut appearance against Marco Cecchinato.
Marco Cecchinato, meanwhile, is a lowly 3-7 for the season and currently sits 96th in the world rankings. What’s worse is that Cecchinato has been playing clay-court tennis since February, but hasn’t set the world alight, winning once in six matches. And given his awful record against Schwartzman, it is tough to imagine the Italian making any sort of impact on the red clay of the Estoril Open.
Schwartzman vs Cecchinato Prediction and Pick
Diego Schwartzman leads Marco Cecchinato 4-1 in their head-to-head. Four of those five meetings have been on the dirt, with Schwartzman holding a 3-1 advantage. When assessing top-100 players currently experiencing a dwindling run of form/results, Schwartzman appears the one likely to negotiate a way to find his old form. And there is no better surface for him to do that than clay. Expect the Argentine to master Cecchinato again at the 2023 Estoril Open.
