Will Rafael Nadal get the win? Will Botic van de Zandschulp pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have the king of clay taking on a player who can give him a run for his money. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 French Open?
Rafael Nadal has never lost before the second week at the French Open, and he is not looking for that to end here. While that streak is very unlikely to end here, Botic van de Zandschulp will be a tough opponent. He plays a big, flat game, something Nadal doesn’t really like. Van de Zandschulp doesn’t have a lot of experience on clay, but he really has the potential to do some damage. Nadal though has looked real solid so far, and as the eternal favorite of the red clay in Paris I expect him to take this one and book his spot in the Round of 16 at the 2022 French Open.
Botic van de Zandschulp has been in good form, he obviously made his famous run at the US Open last year, and he’s taking to the clay quite well. But there’s no opponent more brutal than Rafael Nadal on these courts. If he wants to win, he will have to play incredibly aggressively. We still aren’t 100% sure on the physical state of Nadal, but assuming he’s physically fit, the Spaniard always finds a way as he will likely do here again at the 2022 French Open.
Rafael Nadal and Botic van de Zandschulp have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s Van de Zandschulps first meeting against a Big 3 member, and it’s not in the worst conditions possible. Yes, it’s Nadal in Roland Garros, however, the matchup here is good for Van de Zandschulp, I expect him to at least cause some small damage here. Let’s see what the No. 5 seed can do though as he aims to reach the 2nd week in his quest for #14 at the 2022 French Open.
