TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Cristian Garin (22) in the Round of 16 on Sunday June 5th, 2021.
A huge battle is expected here at the 2021 French Open as Daniil Medvedev and Cristian Garin are set to clash in the Round of 16. Not many would have expected second seeded Medvedev to reach this far, but he has been playing some outstanding tennis here at Roland Garros 2021. Can he go one step further and stop Cristian Garin, considered to be one of the best clay court players in the world? Who will win and advance to their first Quarter-Final here at Roland Garros?
Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings and is also the second seed here at the 2021 French Open. The Russian star has been one of the standout players on tour over the past few seasons, but his clay court record has been dismal to say the least. He went on record saying that his goal was to simply win one match here at Roland Garros 2021, a feat that he achieved with his impressive win over Alexander Bublik. He backed that up with dominant wins over Americans Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka, and the Russian looks truly focused here, something that we haven’t seen on this surface for some time. Despite his superior ranking, he has to be considered the underdog here against Cristian Garin, an exciting young clay-court specialist.
Cristian Garin is currently ranked #22 in the ATP world rankings and is seeded #23 here at Roland Garros 2021. The Chilean has established a reputation as one of the best clay court players in the world and is always a dark horse contender for these big clay events. Garin has had a tough road to the Round of 16, going a set down in each of his first two matches to Juan Londero and Mackenzie McDonald before winning in four sets over Marcos Giron in the Third Round. None of those opponents should have pushed him to the limit like that, so it is evident that he is not quite at his best here at Roland Garros 2021. He would normally be considered the favorite here against Daniil Medvedev on clay, but the Russian is arguably playing better tennis at the moment and this should be tight match.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with the head to head series tied 1-1. Medvedev won in 2019 in Toronto, with Garin winning a few weeks ago on the clay in Madrid. As stated earlier, the Chilean would normally be the favorite on clay, but he has really struggled so far this week, while the world #2 has been unusually dominant on clay. This will surely be a very close match, and it can really go either way. Picking “Both players to win a set” is probably the only safe pick here, and I am going to lean with Cristian Garin to get a very hard fought win here at the 2021 French Open. He has the much greater clay-court pedigree, and I expect him to step up on the big stage here, winning in five close sets to advance to the Quarter-Finals here at Roland Garros 2021.
