The American surprised almost everybody by taking a wild card at the event, coming in as the only top 20 player in the draw. But it was a decision that made perfect sense and Paul has certainly got his mojo back with a couple of tidy performances to reach the semifinal.

David Goffin has been a hit-and-miss this year but got a solid win over French youngster Arthur Fils. He needed to fight back from a set down to win in a nervy third-set tiebreak where he almost squandered a 5-2 tiebreak lead. Goffin’s only title this year came at the Challenger level, so can he reach the final at the Aix-en-Provence?

In as much as Goffin has played some gutsy tennis this week, he was certainly left off the hook by Fils in that quarterfinal match.
