Borna Coric will be playing in a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2021 Australian Open. The Croatian star enters this year’s French Open with very little expectations and the bookies have instilled him as the underdog in his first-round match against Carlos Taberner. Will Coric defy the odds?
Borna Coric is yet to hit the ground running since recovering from shoulder surgery. Coric will be playing a Grand Slam match for the first time since his four-set defeat to Mackenzie McDonald at the 2021 Australian Open. Since then he played in Rotterdam before shutting down his 2021 season to undergo treatment on a debilitating shoulder injury. Coric has endured a mixed return, scoring just one win from six tournaments and comes to the French Open with a protected ranking. However, the 25-year-old Croatian has only lost once in the first round in six visits to Paris, so could he avoid defeat when he takes on Carlos Taberner?
Carlos Taberner enters this first round match at the French Open as a slight favorite. He is the higher-ranked player and has been playing clay-court tennis since he exited the Australian Open in January. The Spaniard added to his trophy cabinet when he won his fifth career title on the Challenger Tour at the Roseto DegliAbruzzi in mid March – around the same time Coric was playing his first match in a year at Indian Wells.
Borna Coric and Carlos Taberner have not clashed on the ATP Tour. Sunday’s match at the French Open will be their first official meeting. The Spaniard is more at home on the surface and will be looking to grind down Coric with the use of spin and hyper aggressive baseline game. He embodies the spirit of his idol David Ferrer who put his heart into every point. Taberner is clearly the superior clay-courter, but for some reason I fancy the upset in this one.
