Rome Open 2022: Novak Djokovic vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas Tennis Pick and Prediction
TennisSection previews the 2022 Rome Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final on Sunday, May 15th, 2022.
The final of the 2022 Rome Open is a repeat of last year’s quarterfinal on this very court in a match that spanned over two days. Novak Djokovic, who is into his 12th final in Italy’s capital, will be looking to win his first title of a chaotic season. As for Stefanos Tsitsipas, he has earned a shot at redemption and will be looking to put it right this time against the Serb. Who will lay his hands on the Rome Open title?
Novak Djokovic has reached his fourth final in a row at the Rome Open after dispatching Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-4 6-3. Consequently, Djokovic recorded his 1000th match win on the ATP Tour – joining a gaudy list of champions including rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal along with Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors to pull off that feat. While that record was on his mind at the start of the week, the Serbian star has other more important milestones to crack on Sunday. Having cemented his No. 1 ranking by winning his quarterfinal match against Auger-Aliassime, Djokovic could win a record-extending 38th Masters crown. Can he maintain his perfect record in finals against Stefanos Tsitsipas?
While Djokovic’s progress this week has been serene, Stefanos Tsitsipas has stared down the barrel of meek second-round defeat against Grigor Dimitrov. He saved a pair of match points in that match and needed to dig out hard-fought wins over the likes of Karen Khachanov and Alexander Zverev. Victory over Zverev in the last four was his 31st of 2022 – the most by any player this season. Having compiled a solid 14-2 record on the dirt this term, the Greek is bidding to win the last Masters 1000 on clay before Roland Garros. Will he upstage the World No. 1?
Novak Djokovic leads Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 in their head-to-head. Djokovic is also a perfect 4-0 in finals matches against the Greek star, beating him from two sets down in their last showdown at the French Open last year. Tsitsipas is the in-form player during this clay swing amassing more wins than any other player. A month ago, Djokovic’s season was in turmoil. Lack of match play was having a substantial effect on his physical toll. But now that he is playing regularly, he has gotten into rhythm. This will be ultimate test for the Serb, but if he operates on the same level as he has throughout the week, he should shut the gates on Tsitsipas’ Rome Open campaign.
