TennisSection previews the 2021 Mallorca Open as Roberto Bautista Agut (3) meets Sam Querrey in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday June 24th, 2021.
Third seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut will face unseeded American Sam Querrey in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. Can the surprise Quarter-Finalist Querrey get the win and advance to his second grass-court Semi-Final this season? Or will the experienced RBA advance to his first?
Roberto Bautista Agut is currently ranked #10 on the ATP Tour and is the third seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Spaniard has built a reputation over the years as one of the hardest working and most consistent players on the tour, and is always a difficult opponent on any surface. After a quiet start to the year by his lofty standards he would have been hoping to start the grass court season positively, but suffered a First Round defeat to Sebastian Korda in Halle. This has never been his favorite surface, but he does have a title on grass and he certainly is no slouch. RBA was impressive in his First Round win over Stefano Travaglia, returning very well in his straight set win. He is in for a difficult match against Sam Querrey who is a dangerous opponent despite his lower ranking, especially on this surface.
Sam Querrey is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is ranked #60 in the ATP world rankings. The American has been in mixed form over the last few years, and has seen his ranking plummet from a career high #11 on the ATP Tour. Despite his poor recent form, he has been impressive so far this grass court season, reaching the Semis in Stuttgart. The big serving American is a former Wimbledon Semi-Finalist and Queen’s champion, and is a much better grass court player than his ranking suggests. Querrey had a tough three set win over Carballes Baena before Halle champion retired to hand him a spot in the Quarters. It is hard to call him the underdog here, and if his serve is working well he is sure to have a great chance of winning this match against Roberto Bautista Agut here at the 2021 Mallorca Open.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Roberto Bautista Agut leading the head to head series 3-1. Two interesting stats are that Querrey won their last meeting in 2019, and the Spaniard surprisingly won their only meeting on grass. This is a difficult match to call, due to their very different recent form. Over the past few years, the American has been on a sharp decline while RBA has established himself as one of the most solid and consistent players in the world. However, this surface is where Sam Querrey shines, and he is beginning to round into form this grass court season. Bautista Agut is certainly more than capable of getting the win, but I am going with the big-serving American to get a close win, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Mallorca Open.
