As fate would have it, Grigor Dimitrov will cross swords with Marcos Giron for the second year in a row at the French Open. The Bulgarian will be hoping his body holds up for the entire match in this one and atone for last year’s disappointing exit at the hands of the American which was via a retirement.
Grigor Dimitrov is 8-4 on the clay this season, recording his best result at the Monte Carlo Masters in April. The Bulgarian was extremely unfortunate in his next three tournaments as he would square off against Stefanos Tsitsipas – one of the best performers on the dirt in the last 12 months. Dimitrov suffered a trio of defeats to the Greek in as many weeks – with the most chastening loss coming in Rome where he spurned match points. But nonetheless, he should feel pretty positive about his chances of going deep this fortnight at the French Open.
Marcos Giron will be hoping lightning strikes twice when he takes on Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday at the French Open. The American performed well beyond his capabilities at last year’s French Open where he would reach the third round. That runincluded wins over Dimitrov (retirement) and Guido Pella. Giron has been far from convincing on the clay this season. Aside from a decent showing in Rome where he reached the Round of 16 as a lucky loser, he failed to win another match at the other six clay-court tournaments he played in.
Marcos Giron leads Grigor Dimitrov 1-0 in their head-to-head. The American’s win, incidentally, came at last year’s French Open where he fought back from two sets down and saved three match points before picking up the win when Dimitrov retired due to a back injury late in the fourth set. It will be tough for the American to produce such a result this time. The Bulgarian would have easily wrapped up that match had it not been for the unfortunate injury he picked up in the third set. Dimitrov should cruise.
