TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Frances Tiafoe takes on Cristian Garin in the first round on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022.
Fresh from a runner-up finish in Estoril, Frances Tiafoe will facea very tricky opener at the Madrid Open when he takes on Cristian Garin. Tiafoe was running empty for large patches of his finals defeat in Portugal and it will be interesting to see whether he has recharged his batteries in the Spanish capital.
After playing four straight three-setters, Frances Tiafoe paid a hefty price in the final when he was dominated by Argentina’s Sebastian Baez. Tiafoe did not have enough gas left in the tank and despite taking a 2-0 lead in the first set, he missed the chance to secure a double break. That proved telling as Baez roared back and won six of the next seven games to win the set. Tiafoe could not prevent the Next Gen star from running away with the match and the title as Baez romped to victory in the second set. It is the second time in his career he has finished as a losing finalist in Estoril, but on a positive note, the American has warmed up nicely for a more demanding month ahead of Paris. Can Tiafoe recover to defeat Cristian Garin at the Madrid Open?
Cristian Garin will be looking to snap his three-match losing streak on Tuesday when he takes on the enigmatic Frances Tiafoe at the Madrid Open. Garin’s hopes of adding to his five ATP career titles this season have been dissipating this clay season. Surprisingly, he failed to win a match during the Golden Swing. And although he produced a respectable semifinal run in Houston as the defending champion, he was beaten in his last two tournaments in the first round. It is certainly a worrying run of results for the Chilean who is 6-10 for the season.
Frances Tiafoe and Cristian Garin have not met on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Madrid Open will be their first official meeting. Naturally, Garin is expected to have the upper hand in this contest owing to his superior clay-court skills. But the Chilean is woefully out of form. The downside for Tiafoe is that he may not get sufficient rest time to play well enough in Madrid.
