TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Cristian Garin takes on Norbert Gombos in the Round of 128 on Monday, August 30th, 2021.
Will Cristian Garin go through? Will Norbert Gombos pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Garin can back up his solid results as of late and make another good run at a slam. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open?
Cristian Garin has had a pretty good season, despite often being labeled as a clay court specialist, he’s recently shown that he can do more than that, having good results even at Wimbledon, bowing out in the fourth round to world number one Novak Djokovic. He hasn’t been playing too well as of late though, losing in the first round of both Toronto and Cincinnati. That’s why it definitely won’t be a straightforward win against Norbert Gombos, especially if he doesn’t increase his level quickly. Still, I expect him to get the win, as he’s just ranked higher and has shown many more results than Gombos has, even if he’s been lacking in form lately. Let’s see if he can show his top level here and be dangerous at the 2021 US Open.
Norbert Gombos has been having worse results than Garin lately, losing in the first round in his last three tournaments, which all occurred within the last couple of weeks. These definitely aren’t good signs for him heading into this match against Cristian Garin, who although has not been playing too well either, has a high ranking and overall a solid year along with more experience to back it all up. Due to all of this, Garin is the really heavy favorite, and for him to lose he’ll most likely need to drop his level quite a bit under his average. It will be super tough match for Gombos, who will have to pull out his very best tennis and hope to take advantage of the few opportunities he might get at the 2021 US Open.
Cristian Garin and Norbert Gombos have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s not too interesting of a match-up, with two pretty common styles on the ATP Tour, however, Garin likes to grind a little bit more than Gombos, while Gombos will sometimes rip the ball and overall hit the ball flatter and play more aggressive. Still, they aren’t too different and the main differences are mental, not between their games. Garin though definitely has the edge in many things, including his confidence and experience. I expect Garin to get a nice win to kick off his campaign here at the 2021 US Open and propel himself into the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open.
