TennisSection previews the 2021 Los Cabos Open as Sam Querrey (4) meets Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 16 on Wednesday July 21st, 2021.
An “All-American” encounter awaits us in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open as fourth seeded Sam Querrey faces Brandon Nakashima for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Both men have been in relatively poor form of late and will be hoping to kick start their seasons with a strong week here in Mexico. Will it be the veteran Querrey or the promising young Brandon Nakashima getting the win and advancing?
Sam Querrey is the fourth seed at the 2021 Los Cabos Open and is currently ranked #70 on the ATP Tour. Once ranked as high as #11 in the world, he has seen his ranking slide drastically over the past few seasons and will be hopeful of getting his career back on track. After a dreadful start to the year he found some success during grass season, reaching the Semi-Finals in Stuttgart and the Final in Mallorca. That was followed by a poor Wimbledon campaign and he will be looking to go on another run here in Mexico. He enters this match against fellow American Brandon Nakashima as the big favorite, but his young opponent has shown flashes of potential throughout his young career and should not be discounted here.
Brandon Nakashima is unseeded here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open and is ranked #134 on the ATP Tour. The youngster is a former ITF Junior Masters winner, and has had a promising start to his pro career. Like his opponent Sam Querrey, he enters this event in poor form and will be looking for a strong showing here. He won his First Round match in unconvincing fashion, a tight three set win over Jeffrey John Wolf. Nakashima will know that he has to be much better to have any chance against the former Wimbledon Semi-Finalist Querrey, and enters this match as the big underdog due to the huge gulf in their rankings and experience.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and despite the gap in rankings I expect it to be a close one. Sam Querrey is very experienced but has demonstrated that his career is on the decline, while Brandon Nakashima is a very promising young player with huge potential for the future. While Nakashima has the quality to keep it close, I still expect the veteran Querrey to eventually get the win in the end. This will likely go the distance, but give me the more experienced player in a close match every time. Sam Querrey to win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open.
