John Isner got a tough win over a Houston specialist in Steve Johnson to set up a back to back meeting coming up against Frances Tiafoe. Both players struggled in their matches, but Isner looked to be sharper overall, managing to even break serve in the 3rd set and serve his way to the win. I don’t think Tiafoe will be able to handle the big game of Isner especially on the clay as the two clash for a place in the semifinals at the Houston Open 2022.
Frances Tiafoe took down Pablo Cuevas, a great clay courter in his own right to move through against big John. If he wants to take out Isner, he is going to have to hope that Isner doesn’t serve too well, otherwise I don’t see much hope for him. I of course expect some tiebreakers, but Tiafoes game can fall apart at times and playing someone like Isner with such a big serve will make it a very dangerous match for him. Let’s see if he can stay in it at the Houston Open 2022.
John Isner and Frances Tiafoe have met twice before, with John Isner leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings came a few years ago, but go to prove the point that when Tiafoe plays against a playstyle like that of Isners, he will be in trouble. Playing on clay will help him, since serving worse will punish you less, but Isner will still be almost impossible to break, so I do expect Isner to get it done in the end and move on to the final four at the Houston Open 2022.
