Taylor Fritz got a great win to set up a clash with the defending champion and clay court specialist Cristian Garin. While Fritz is a clear favorite, it will by no means be easy. We know Fritz can play anywhere as is evident by some of his results on grass and his title in Indian Wells, a very slow surface. Clay is a little different however, and Garin’s experience there will be very important. Let’s see if Fritz can meet expectations to take the win and move on to the semifinals at the Houston Open 2022.
Cristian Garin got a hard fought win in both of his matches thus far, and it will only get more challenging coming up against the number one American in Taylor Fritz. Garin might be a clay specialist, but Fritz can play anywhere, and his level today is probably a pretty good indicator of how the match will go. I expect Garin to fight of course, but he doesn’t really have the weapons to contest with the firepower of Fritz who I expect to continue to roll through the draw at the Houston Open 2022.
Taylor Fritz and Cristian Garin have met twice before, with this being their first career meeting. As aforementioned, Garin knows what to do on this surface, but the way he plays is mostly defensive and trying to stay in the rallies. Fritz on the other hand likes to punch through the court and be the aggressor. Even on the clay that will always be the better strategy if done well, and I fully expect him to do so and book a place in the semifinals at the Houston Open 2022.
