Reilly Opelka got a tough win to move on and face Gijs Brouwer, but he got it done and showed he’s ready to play on the clay. He’s historically had some pretty good results on clay in fact, reaching the semifinals of Rome last season, falling to Nadal. Brouwer is a new player, and while he’s notched up a few good wins, I doubt he can do much against the big serving American at the Houston Open 2022.
Gijs Brouwer shocked Houston by taking down J.J. Wolf, a clear favorite in that match. Now that he’s done that, it almost seems like he wouldn’t be a guy to go against here either. Opelka is top 20 though, and he can play consistently from the ground too, on the clay, with how tall he is, I really think a lot of his game is favored even more aside from his serve, which will be deadly no matter what. Let’s see if he can push Opelka for a place in the final four at the Houston Open 2022.
Reilly Opelka and Gijs Brouwer have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Brouwer plays a good clay court game, hitting a heavy ball on the forehand side and a flat backhand, a rather common pattern nowadays, especially in Cameron Norrie, who there are many similarities with. Against a big server and consistent player like Opelka though, I think he comes up too short as he looks to pull off an astounding upset while both players fight for a spot in the semifinals at the Houston Open 2022.
