TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Andy Murray in the Round of 64 on Sunday, October 10th, 2021.
Will Carlos Alcaraz move on? Will Andy Murray pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a very promising young talent facing a tennis legend. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Carlos Alcaraz has had a fantastic breakout year. Since making the quarter finals this year and having to retire against FAA we haven’t seen him. But there are very high expectations of him, and he will have to get through this one to fulfil it. Andy Murray is a really tough player, even in this dwindling version of him. While I do expect Alcaraz to get through this one, Murray is historically known for his defensive abilities and being able to absorb the pace, and Alcaraz is most certainly a player who plays with lots of pace and has heavy offense. I think Alcaraz is in just much better form, and that’s why he defeated Tsitsipas at the U.S Open and Murray did not, while I do expect him to get through this one with some trouble, it should be a fun one as we watch the two clash for a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Andy Murray has been playing pretty well during his resurgence. Taking out some top players and being able to win matches at a high level. He had a pretty high level during San Diego, and it seems he’s carried over here to Indian Wells. He returned great, with the right level of offense, simply being able to overpower his opposition. He keeps getting some tough draws, due to his low ranking, and he already has to take on Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz is playing fantastic right now, and Murray will need to take advantage of his relatively sub-par serve compared to the rest of his game. I think he will have to adapt to the conditions here and play at a very aggressive level, since even in his peak, Indian Wells was never his favorite tournament. Let’s see if he can push Alcaraz for a spot in the next round here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Carlos Alcaraz and Andy Murray have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s an interesting matchup, controlled offense vs. controlled defense. Neither player is on too extreme of an end, especially at this stage in their careers. If it stays that way, Alcaraz should have minimal problems getting through this one, if Murray can be the aggressor though, then it is possible. Murray has a great tennis IQ, and he will be able to figure out Alcaraz’s weaknesses, such as his backhand and his serve, and he will pressure him to make those shots time and time again. Still though, Alcaraz is the clear favorite and is in form to get this win and move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open
