French Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Reilly Opelka Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Daniil Medvdev (2) meets Reilly Opelka (32) in the Third Round on Friday June 4th, 2021.

A very interesting match awaits us here at the 2021 French Open as second seeded Daniil Medvedev will face Reilly Opelka in the Third Round. Both men are known for their success on hard courts, and are looking to reach the Round of 16 here at Roland Garros for the first time. Will it be the talented yet controversial Russian getting the win, or can Opelka cause the upset and advance here at Roland Garros 2021?

Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings and is also the second seed here at the 2021 French Open. The Russian star has been one of the standout players on tour over the past few seasons, but his clay court record has been dismal to say the least. He went on record saying that his goal was to simply win one match here at Roland Garros 2021 a feat that he achieved with an impressive straight-sets win over Alexander Bublik. Medvedev then defeated Tommy Paul in four sets, coming from a set down to get the win. While he is not comfortable on clay, he is so talented that he can do well if he was truly focused, and that seems to be the case here. He won’t be a major threat for the Crown here in Paris, but is the slight favorite here over Reilly Opelka.

Reilly Opelka is currently ranked #35 in the ATP world rankings, and is the number 32 seed here at the 2021 French Open. The big serving American has had a very poor clay court season, but surprisingly reached the Semi-Finals of the Rome Masters, proving that he is not necessarily a slouch on this surface. Like his opponent Daniil Medvedev, he passed the First Round here at Roland Garros for the First time, with an impressive win over the in-form Jaume Munar. He then went one step further by cruising to victory over Andrej Martin in straight sets. Similarly to his compatriot John Isner, Opelka’s serve can take him to victory almost on its own, and will be extremely hard to return here, even on the slower surface. While he should be considered the underdog here, he is certainly capable of getting the victory here and advancing to the Round of 16 here at Roland Garros 2021.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head series 2-1. Each time they have played has been a three set battle, but none of these matches have come on clay courts. This is a difficult match to call due to both players’ disdain for the surface, but I am going with Daniil Medvedev here. He has a lot more versatility than his opponent Reilly Opelka and has seemed to find form at the right time. I expect Opelka to serve his way to a set, but ultimately he will lose here at the 2021 French Open. I don’t think that Medvedev will go much further than this, but he has enough to win at least one more round here at Roland Garros 2021.
