TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Benoit Paire takes on Thiago Monteiro in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, January 18th, 2021.
Will Benoit Paire get the win? Will Thiago Monteiro pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the Frenchman full of flare taking on a tough opponent. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open?
Benoit Paire has been playing on a very inconsistent level for quite some time now. He had some inconsistent spurts in 2021 where he played some fantastic tennis, especially in the North American hard court swing. For much of the year though, he struggled mentally to get himself into any of his matches. That was the case in his first match down under having been destroyed by Kokkinakis in straight sets with a bagel. Paire plays well if he’s in the right state of mind, though, and I most definitely expect for him to regroup and take down Thiago Monteiro to move on to the next round here at the 2022 Australian Open, even if he faces some turbulence.
Thiago Monteiro had a pretty decent start to the Australian Swing, having conquered Monfils, although he most certainly did get lucky that Monfils got injured, he played a great match. I do not expect him to be able to get past Benoit Paire though, seeing as he has a negative head-to-head against him and fast hard courts are really not his surface, whereas they really are Benoit Paires surface. Monteiro loves the clay, which entails that he has a very heavy topspin-oriented game, whereas Paire loves to hit through the ball, allowing him a good counter to Monteiro’s game. Let’s see if Monteiro can take advantage of Paire’s mental state and produce a close thriller as he aims to challenge the Frenchman for a place in the next round here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Benoit Paire and Thiago Monteiro have twice before, with Benoit Paire leading the head to head 2-0. The two met at small hard court tournaments in 2019 and 2020, with Paire winning both meetings. The fact that despite his inconsistencies, he managed to win both of their meetings on the same surface as this matchup, really gives me hope for Paire. He had a poor start in Australia though, so I actually expect him to fight, and ultimately take down Thiago Monteiro in five sets to book himself a place in the next round here at the 2022 Australian Open.
