TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Frances Tiafoe (16) takes on Jenson Brooksby (WC) in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
Will the up-and-coming Jenson Brooksby continue to impress the local crowd as he aims to make a name for himself as one of the future best Americans on the ATP Tour? Will Frances Tiafoe show his fellow American what the difference is between a rookie and an experienced player on the ATP Tour? Both players can come through this All-American encounter here to make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open, but only one will. Who will it be?
Jenson Brooksby got his revenge for his loss to Kevin Anderson a few weeks ago in the Final of the Hall of Fame Open as he now caused the upset here in the first round of Washington, beating Kevin Anderson easily in straight sets 7-6/6-3. Jenson is definitely someone you cannot take lightly because he is a power hitter and he has a very big first serve. Jenson is making a name for himself so he is in the mental zone where he does not care whether he wins of loses and he’ll just give it his best on the court. Now, Jenson Brooksby meets his fellow American, Frances Tiafoe, so he will know that it is going to be a powerful match on both sides and he’ll have to be at his best.
Frances Tiafoe made it to the second round in Tokyo last week, but lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. Frances has been in strong form recently, beating Tsitsipas easily at Wimbledon, and making his way back into main draws and continuously making it to the second round or quarter finals. When Frances is confident, it is hard to stop him as he is one of the toughest players to play on a hard court. Frances has so much power behind all of his strokes, and he will know that he needs to ensure he does not overpower shots now that he meets another power hitting opponent in Jenson Brooksby here at the 2021 Washington Open.
Frances Tiafoe and Jenson Brooksby have never met before, with this being their first career meeting on the ATP Tour. Both of these players can win this match and can overpower the other. The winner of this match will come down to who is able to hit less unforced errors when trying to hit winners. Both of them are prone to doing so, but going off of experience and from recent form before the Tokyo Olympics, I think that Frances is very determined to rise back up the rankings and get himself well prepared for the US Open. It will be a tight match as Brooksby has nothing to lose, but the experience of Tiafoe will shine through as he makes his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open.
