Miami Open 2022: Alexander Zverev vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Thanasi Kokkinakis in the fourth round on Tuesday, March 29th, 2022.

Alexander Zverev prepares for his first acid test at the Miami Open when he takes on a rejuvenated Thanasi Kokkinakis in the fourth round. Will the German survive the Aussie’s onslaught or will Kokkinakis continue to make up ground in the rankings with another mammoth win?

Alexander Zverev recorded a routine win over Mackenzie McDonald, undoubtedly the most assured display of his 2022 season. This has been a turbulent year for Zverev on all fronts, from controversy to bad form and damaging defeats. But he made sure there would be no such recurrence at the Miami Open at least before his fourth round match. Zverev, who overcame Borna Coric in three sets in his first outing, made light work of World No. 54 McDonald, beating him for the third time in their series. Zverev broke the American twice in each set and hit 10 aces en route to a 6-2 6-2 win.

Thanasi Kokkinakis, for his part, made it through to the fourth round of the Miami Open with a 7-6 4-6 7-6 win over Denis Kudla. It was a tense match that was hugely dominated by serve. Kokkinakis struck 22 aces, while Kudla also hit double-digits with 10. But when the match came down to the final few points, it was the Australian World No. 97 who showed nerves of steel to prevail in the final tiebreak. With the win, it marks the first time in seven years that Kokkinakis has reached the fourth round of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Alexander Zverev and Thanasi Kokkinakis have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Miami Open will be their first official meeting. Zverev produced a performance akin to his best tennis in that win over McDonald. Kokkinakis is clearly on the up, but it hasn’t been effortless tennis to reach this stage all the way from qualifying. The German second seed is clearly in the mood to banish his Acapulco tantrums and is poised to end the Aussie’s decent run to the fourth round.
