Both Marton Fucsovics and Marcos Giron have caught the inconsistency bug this season. These two players have the capability of producing brilliance in one week and the complete opposite in the other. So it might be worth shutting down our expectations for this first-round match at the Miami Open because it could very well turn into a cagey affair.
Marton Fucsovics is 6-8 in the current season and has since lost his status as a Top 50 player. This is not the first time it has happened to the Hungarian. He was in a similar spot about 12 months ago, but steered his ranking in the right direction in the first quarter of the season. He has lost a huge chunk of points earned during the 2021 season in the month of March, such as the Rotterdam finalist points coming off along with back-to-back quarterfinals in Doha and Dubai. So Fucsovics, who is now ranked 55th in the world has some catching up to do in the next few weeks, beginning with the Miami Open this week.
Marcos Giron, meanwhile, dazzles in one week and then produces a subpar performance in the other. Such has been the story of his 2022 season. Giron reached the semifinals of the newly minted Dallas Open (his best showing of the season so far), beating Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz in the process. He also made the quarters in Acapulco (his other noteworthy achievement), shocking World No. 19 Pablo Carreno Busta en route. Last week, however, the American did not pass his first round in Indian Wells, losing to Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets.
Marton Fucsovics and Marcos Giron have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the Miami Open will be their first official meeting. Both players have not set the world alight this season, but this match opens up the door for one of them to bounce back from recent disappointment. Fucsovics is probably the superior player, but home court advantage could swing this match in the American’s favor.
