Frances Tiafoe will be looking nervously at his shoulder at the prospect of taking on Gael Monfils’ conqueror Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine registered the finest win of his career at the Miami Open and will aim to keep this fairytale run going for at least one more round.
Frances Tiafoe advanced into the fourth round of the Miami Open with a comprehensive win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo. He will now face the older of the Cerundolo brothers in Francisco Cerundolo, who pulled off a major upset on Sunday night. Tiafoe was a step ahead of the younger Argentine in almost every department. He did not face a single break point in the entire 65-minute contest as his hard court prowess proved too strong for the 20-year-old clay-court specialist.
Francisco Cerundolo, meanwhile, scored the biggest win of his career after defeating 22nd seed Gael Monfils in straight sets. The 23-year-old Cerundolo was playing in his first-ever Masters 1000 tournament and was without a hard-court win at tour-level prior to this week at the Miami Open. But he has ticked off both milestones, tallying wins over the likes of Tallon Griekspoor, Reilly Opelka and then Monfils. The win over the Frenchman raised plenty of eyebrows, given the kind of form that Monfils demonstrated in his run to the fourth round of Indian Wells where he stunned Daniil Medvedev. But surprisingly, he played second fiddle to Cerundolo who saved all five break points he faced in the match.
Francis Tiafoe and Francisco Cerundolo have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Miami Open will be their first official meeting. Despite their huge gulf in rankings, this could match could be a lot closer that what the odds suggest. Cerundolo’s confidence is at an all-time high after a sensational run to the fourth round of a Masters tournament for the first time. But he is probably running into Tiafoe at the wrong time. The American is past his recent injury woes and has managed to return to winning ways at the North American hard-court swing. Expect Tiafoe to progress safely to the last eight.
