TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Casper Ruud takes on Cameron Norrie in the fourth round on Tuesday, March 29th, 2022.
Casper Ruud is back in the groove after a difficult two weeks at Indian Wells. Norway’s top-ranked player is into the fourth round of the Miami Open for the first time and will take on British lefty Cameron Norrie for a place in the last eight. Who will come out on top in a meeting between two high-seeded players?
Casper Ruud showed on Sunday why he is no longer a one-trick pony. The Norwegian has refined his game to excel on all surfaces. Ruud had never won a match in the main draw of the Miami Open prior to this year, but has bagged two high-quality wins over Henri Laaksonen and most recently against Montpellier champion Alexander Bublik. And remarkably, he hasn’t taken even an hour in both matches, having dispatched Laaksonen in 51 minutes and Bublik in 58 minutes respectively. It is the second time this season that the world No. 8 has won back-to-back matches following on from his title run at the Argentina Open last month.
Cameron Norrie, meanwhile, became the lone Briton in the Miami Open after compatriots Andy Murray and Dan Evans fell on Saturday. Norrie recorded a straight-sets win over Hugo Gaston, but nearly made a melee of his third-round match against the diminutive Frenchman. He led by a set and was 5-3 up in the second, but lost his bearings momentarily, allowing Gaston to level the second set. But Norrie came out firing in the 11th game as he broke again before serving out the match with aplomb. The 10th seed is on the verge of entering the world’s Top 10 for the first time and victory over Casper Ruud could guarantee him of that accomplishment.
Casper Ruud leads Cameron Norrie 2-0 in their head-to-head. Both matches took place in 2021, with Ruud winning on the hard courts of San Diego and the indoor hard courts of London at the Nitto ATP Finals. Ruud has been efficient in his run to the fourth round of the Miami Open, spending less time and looking almost unbeatable. Norrie has been pushed hard, first by compatriot Draper and then Gaston. If this turns out to be a baseline slugfest, I expect Ruud to have the upper hand. Neither player has lost a set so far, but it looks like both will drop one on Tuesday.
