Marin Cilic has been playing pretty decent as of late, producing some good results, making the second week down under with a win over Rublev. He is the favorite coming into this one, but it won’t be easy. Alexei Popyrin isn’t too consistent, but he has a really big game and can blow Cilic off the court. I think Cilic will win, as he is simply too solid of a player in comparison to Popyrin, but it will be one tough contest as the Croatian aims to move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Miami Open.
Alexei Popyrin got a good win over fellow next-gen player with plenty of talent in Lorenzo Musetti. He has a great serve, and I think this court will help him a little bit, but Popyrin struggles with guys who can hit big back and hit hard. Marin Cilic can do just that. Popyrin often goes out early, and I don’t really expect him to play at a high enough level to actually be able to get over the hurdle here as he aims to extend his stay at the 2022 Miami Open.
Marin Cilic and Alexei Popyrin have met once before, with Alexei Popyrin leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came last year at an indoor hard court, with Popyrin winning 7-6 7-6. This will surely give him some hope as it shows Cilic won’t be blowing him off the court. Both are big servers, but tiebreakers are often a lottery. I think that on this court, it’s more likely that Cilic can dig in on serve and play his famous big game as he aims to move on at the 2022 Miami Open.
