TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Angelique Kerber (16) meets Dayana Yastremska in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
Former world number one Angelique Kerber has recently found form after a few seasons of mixed results, and seems to be finally back to her best. The German star has performed extremely well since Wimbledon and will be seeking to go on a deep run here in Flushing Meadows, where she won the title in 2016. First up in her path is the talented young Ukranian Dayana Yastremska, who has seen her season reduced by a drug ban earlier in the season. Can she upset the former champion here in the First Round? Or will Kerber advance to the Second Round as expected?
Angelique Kerber is the 16th seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #17 on the WTA Tour. The German is a three-time Grand Slam champion, but has not displayed her best tennis over the past few seasons. However, she has found form recently, reaching the Semi-Finals at both Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open, losing to world number one Ashleigh Barty on both occasions. The lefty is still a very dangerous player on a good day, she has just struggled with consistency but her experience cannot be denied. She should be considered the favorite here against Dayana Yastremska but will have to be careful against the talented youngster.
Dayana Yastremska is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #51 in the world rankings. The young Ukrainian seemed like a star in the making when she shot up to a career-high #21 in the world but tested positive for a banned substance shortly after, and only recently made her return to the Tour. She was impressive in her first tournament back reaching the Semi-Finals of the German Open, but has been struggling since. While she is extremely talented, she is still finding her footing after the long layoff, and playing against a former world number one is not an ideal draw for anyone. She is the underdog here and will have to play some outstanding tennis to have any sort of chance in this match.
This will be the second time that the two players are meeting on the WTA Tour, with Dayana Yastremska winning last year after her opponent withdrew when she was up a set and a break. However, I expect this match to be vastly different, with Angelique Kerber getting the comfortable win. The German star has been outstanding over the past few months while Yastremska has struggled, so I don’t see any other result here, especially since it is a Grand Slam where experience counts for a lot. The young Ukrainian still has a big future in the game, but I don’t see her winning here so soon after he long break. Kerber will win here, advancing to the Second Round of the 2021 US Open.
