TennisSection previews the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinal match featuring Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Musetti on Friday, April 14, 2023.
Sinner vs Musetti Match Preview and Prediction
Jannik Sinner will play fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in a potential thriller at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. Who will prevail and reach the semifinals at the Principality?
Jannik Sinner saved a match point in an entertaining three-set win over his good friend Hubert Hurkacz. The 21-year-old was slow off the blocks as Hurkacz settled into the contest early doors by taking a set and a break lead. Sinner was not effective with his powerful ground strokes in difficult windy conditions. But once Sinner broke the Hurkacz serve in the second set, momentum quickly changed. Sinner then had to wipe off a match point at 5-6 in the second-set tiebreak before winning it and went on to dominate the decider. He prevailed 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 to set up a mouthwatering all-Italian quarterfinal against Lorenzo Musetti.
Lorenzo Musetti, meanwhile, scored the mother of all upsets at this week’s Monte-Carlo Masters. He knocked out two-time champion and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in three pulsating sets to reach his third quarterfinal of the season. It was the 21-year-old’s first win over Djokovic in four meetings and his biggest win on at the ATP Tour. Musetti broke Djokovic eight times in the match to complete a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 on a sodden day at the Principality.
Sinner vs Musetti Prediction and Pick
Jannik Sinner leads Lorenzo Musetti 1-0 in their head-to-head, winning their only ATP meeting in Antwerp last year in straight sets. Both players looked down and out at one point on Thursday but produced clutch tennis under pressure to come away with the win. Not to take the gloss away from Musetti’s mammoth win over Djokovic, but dropping serve eight times is so unlike Djokovic. His elbow and forearm were most likely in pain which is why he was wearing a protective arm sleeve. Sinner would have handpicked Musetti as the projected quarterfinal opponent when the draw was made, so he really needs to step up on Friday now that Djokovic is out of the picture.
