TennisSection previews the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinal match featuring Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Taylor Fritz on Friday, April 14, 2023.
Tsitsipas vs Fritz Match Preview and Prediction
Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the two-time defending champ taking on by far his toughest test yet in the No.1 American looking to make his mark on the red clay. Who will triumph and move through to the semifinals at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters?
Stefanos Tsitsipas played a solid match against Nicolas Jarry, cruising through 6-3, 6-4 to book yet another quarterfinal spot at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. Although Taylor Fritz is not synonymous for his clay court prowess, he’s definitely underrated on clay and is certainly extremely dangerous. Although typically I’d definitely favor Tsitsipas here, and not just because of the surface, but because of the tournament in specific, Tsitsipas has been struggling and Fritz is in top form. Let’s see if the Greek can overcome this banana peel to reach the semifinals for a fourth straight year.
Taylor Fritz took down Jiri Lehecka, coming back from a set down and continuing his great level of play from his first match with Stan Wawrinka. Although facing Stefanos Tsitsipas here will be a sterner examination, Fritz has beaten much tougher opponents than Tsitsipas has and he’ll certainly be able to take advantage of Tsitsipas’ current situation on his backhand side. Although it’ll still be a tough task, I think the American might just like his chances here at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Tsitsipas vs Fritz Prediction and Pick
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz have met three times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 3-0. This head-to-head doesn’t hold much bearing for me coming into this match, although Tsitsipas can certainly dictate play with his forehand, he won’t be nearly as dominant going into the forehand of Fritz, not to mention Fritz certainly has the edge on the backhand. It’ll be nip and tuck and Fritz’s improved levels, particularly his clutch play, means he cannot be written off here (saved a combined 12 break points in two matches), and we feel an upset could be on the cards on Friday and the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
