TennisSection previews the 2023 Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Marcos Giron in the first round on Monday, January 16, 2023.

Daniil Medvedev might be hurting from last year’s final defeat at the Australian Open. But the Russian cannot allow himself to be overcome by the moment when he starts his campaign against the dangerous Marcos Giron. Who will prevail?
Daniil Medvedev has finished runner-up in the last two years at the Australian Open. In fact, he has been to the second week in each of the last four editions, and the safe money would be on the Russian making it to the second week unscathed. Medvedev has started the season positively, reaching the semifinals in Adelaide 1, and only losing to eventual winner Novak Djokovic. Will he get his 2023 campaign at Melbourne Park off to a flier when he takes on Marcos Giron?

Marcos Giron, meanwhile, is playing in the Australian Open for the fourth time. And strangely enough, he hasn’t won a match at the tournament in the last three visits. But it will be tough to imagine him ending his winless drought at Melbourne Park when he takes on Daniil Medvedev. Granted Giron is a better player than say, two seasons ago, but he has drawn the short straw here.
Daniil Medvedev leads the head-to-head over Marcos Giron 1-0, beating him at the Cincinnati Masters in 2020. Giron is in search of his first win at the Australian Open. He should at least make this a competitive affair, but we cannot see anything but a comfortable win for the seventh seed.
