Grigor Dimitrov has received a tricky opener at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. Playing a crowd favorite in Tommy Paul is just not what the Bulgarian ordered. He will also be looking to snap his two-match losing streak. Let us take a look at this match in detail.
Grigor Dimitrov will be looking to emulate the form he showed at last year’s Indian Wells Masters. He famously defeated the current World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev en route to the semifinals. It remains his personal best achievement in these parts in eight trips. Dimitrov’s spell as a top-10 player might have ended and without any hope of resurgence, but he is still relatively one of the finest shot makers in the men’s game. He will face a tough battle against the crowd favorite Tommy Paul when the pair lock horns for the second time on US soil.
Tommy Paul, in contrast, has enjoyed a steady climb in the ATP rankings. The American is entrenched inside the world’s top 40, sitting at a career-high No. 39. Paul has also produced better results than Dimitrov in the first quarter of the season. He has reached the quarterfinals or better at four of his five tournament appearances in 2022. Last year, he played superbly on his main draw debut at the Indian Wells Masters, scoring the biggest win of his career in beating Andrey Rublev before he fell to eventual champion Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16.
Grigor Dimitrov and Cameron Norrie are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Both meetings took place at Grand Slam level. Paul won the pair’s first showdown at the 2020 Australian Open in five sets, before Dimitrov avenged that loss at the US Open later that year. The general feeling is that Dimitrov is waning. Paul, meanwhile, is playing some of the best tennis of his life right now. On paper, Dimitrov should have too much craft, but on current form Paul looks a slight favorite.
