Reilly Opelka doesn’t have an easy first round opponent as when Musetti is on fire for a match, he usually keeps it up for the tournament, and he was just that in his match against Giron at Indian Wells. I do think he will give Opelka trouble, but for all the areas where he lacks, I feel Opelka is really able to outclass him and cause him many problems as he aims to power through the young Italian at Indian Wells 2022.
Lorenzo Musetti got a great win over Giron in the opening round of Indian Wells, definitely helping me believe that he has a shot here coming up against Reilly Opelka, but ultimately, the matchup isn’t great for him as returning is not his strongsuit, and he struggles to take the necessary aggressive and quirky shots you need to make to power through him. It will most definitely be a difficult one, but I think he can challenge him a little bit as he aims to grab a place in the next round at Indian Wells 2022.
Reilly Opelka and Lorenzo Musetti have met twice before coming into this match at Indian Wells, with Reilly Opelka leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings came on a court where Musetti should be a heavy favorite in Rome last year, with Opelka winning quite easily. Their other meeting came at the US Open, which Opelka also unsurprisingly won. I expect him to continue this pattern and take down Musetti even though it is a slow court as he aims to book a spot in the Round of 32 at Indian Wells 2022.
