Nikoloz Basilashvili hasn’t had good results since his run to the final here last year, just in October. I do think his results will improve here, and he still got a nice result in Doha this year where he won last year. This court really suits him, Indian Wells is very slow this year and Basilashvili is one of the most dangerous players in the world if he’s on one of them and at his best. Fognini really is more of a fast courter, so while he is dangerous, I still favor Basilashvili as he aims to progress at Indian Wells 2022.
Fabio Fognini got a tough win over Andujar, a great slow courter himself. It wouldn’t be too surprising if Fognini took him down, but Basilashvili will have more confidence here, along with his game being super risky and needing more time to rip his groundstrokes from the baseline. I think it will be tough either way, but Basilashvili will take him down in the end to show he loves this court and to move on at Indian Wells 2022.
Nikoloz Basilashvili and Fabio Fognini have met once before, with Fabio Fognini leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came last year in Cincinnati, with Fognini winning in straights. That court is the opposite of this one, so Basilashvili will definitely be favored here, but if he isn’t consistent, he’ll likely get tossed aside.
