TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Iga Swiatek (8) meets Rebecca Peterson in the Round of 64 on Thursday, June 3rd 2021.
Will Rebecca Peterson be able to cause another upset but perhaps in an easier fashion? Will Iga Swiatek continue to cruise through her matches as she looks to keep her Roland Garros title defence hopes alive? Rebecca Peterson will face an uphill battle here against the defending French Open champion here and she will be looking to cause the upset. Can she do it?
Rebecca Peterson came back from a set down in the Round of 128 against Shelby Rogers to win in 3 sets 6-7/7-6/6-2. Rebecca Peterson is a good player, but she is also quite inconsistent on the WTA Tour. She has a strong all-round game, but none of her skills are superior than anyone else on the WTA Tour in the Top 40 individually. Rebecca Peterson will have to ensure she is at her absolute best and is able to find consistency in her game to ensure she can fight at a high level from the start of a match all the way to the end. However, I am unsure if Rebecca Peterson will be able to do that here at the 2021 French Open as she now meets Iga Swiatek in the Round of 64.
Iga Swiatek cruised through her Roland Garros 2021 Round of 128 match, beating Kaja Juvan in straight sets 6-0/7-5. Iga Swiatek was determined to get her campaign started off strongly here at Roland Garros as well as she ended it in Rome a few weeks ago. The first set was superb form the Pole, and the second set was important for Swiatek to be able to show composure during tight moments. Iga will now be even more confident than she was entering the tournament, and she will want to cruise through another match against the likes of Rebecca Peterson to ensure her title defence is still alive here at the 2021 French Open.
Iga Swiatek and Rebecca Peterson have never met before, with this being their first meeting. Unfortunately for the Swede, I see no chance for her to get another upset under her belt here at Roland Garros 2021. Iga Swiatek is just on another level than anyone else on clay at the moment, only being possibly compared to Ashleigh Barty, and I don’t see her giving up her stronghold so early on against such a lower ranked opponent. Iga Swiatek will come out here determined to be off the court fast and in a dominant fashion. Therefore, Peterson will have to be even better than her best if she wants to even win a set. Iga will not let that happen, and she will win in straight sets.
