Rio Open 2022: Diego Schwartzman vs. Carlos Alcaraz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Rio Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Carlos Alcaraz in the final on Sunday, February 20th, 2022.

Will Diego Schwartzman get the win? Will Carlos Alcaraz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the top Argentine taking on the Spaniard hope. Who will move on to the final at the 2022 Rio Open?

Diego Schwartzman fought through some brutal matches, playing 5.5 hours in total on Saturday in both of his matches. He has a very tough one ahead of him in Carlos Alcaraz, while I would normally favor him, he looked real tired, and as fit and physical as Schwartzman is, he is human, and eventually it’ll be too much tennis for him along with the fact that Alcaraz’s brutal hitting will make him run. Alcaraz is playing amazing, and unless Schwartzman plays more aggressive, it’ll be really challenging. I still think he can win, but it will be one brutal battle as he aims to become the champion of the 2022 Rio Open.

Carlos Alcaraz got a couple great wins himself on Saturday, of course also having to play 2 matches in one day, just not quite as physical as well as not having played all those tournaments before Rio. It’s his first ATP 500 final, and he is staring down one of the greatest clay courters in the game right now. Alcaraz has this match in his grasp, with his massive hitting along with the shoulder issue Schwartzman apparently had, he is looking to be the slight favorite here. The occasion might get to him though, and the mental fortitude of Schwartzman is something to be displayed in an art museum. It will be one tough match, but Alcaraz might just have this one in his reach as he aims to win the 2022 Rio Open.

Diego Schwartzman and Carlos Alcaraz have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a fascinating matchup, and you would think Alcaraz has the edge because he hits so massively while also possessing a much stronger serve, but Schwartzman managed to take down Dominic Thiem at the French Open before, who is much more extreme than Alcaraz, especially as it stands. Schwartzman was in ridiculous form then though, whereas he isn’t playing as good now, he of course reached the final of Rio anyway, but Alcaraz will probably pull off the upset in terms of ranking and break the top 20 for the first time. I think if Schwartzman can recuperate and outlast Alcaraz in some of the longer rallies, he should take the championship, but that seems unlikely as the young Spaniard aims to continue to rampage through the draw and aims to close out the tournament as the champion at the 2022 Rio Open.
