TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Sofia Kenin (4) meets Madison Brengle in the Second Round on Wednesday June 30th, 2021.
Yet another “All-American clash” awaits us in the Second Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as fourth seeded Sofia Kenin will face Madison Brengle. Surprisingly, Kenin has never advanced past the Second Round despite all of her success and will be seeking to set a new career-high by winning here. Can Brengle spoil the party and cause the shocking upset?
Sofia Kenin is currently ranked #6 on the WTA Tour and is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The American has had a fantastic start to her young career, reaching two Grand Slam Finals last year and winning the Australian Open. Kenin has started this year slowly, but is still a very dangerous player and should not be discounted as a contender despite her poor grass court record. She was dominant in her First Round win over Wang Xinyu serving very well and was moving very well. She enters this match against countrywoman Madison Brengle as the favorite here and should be expected to advance here.
Madison Brengle is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is ranked #82 on the WTA Tour. AT 31 years old she is a very experienced campaigner and reached the Third Round here in 2017. The American did not have a great preparation for this event, losing in the First Round of the three grass court events that she played, and is up against it here against the fourth seeded Sofia Kenin. Brengle may also be feeling the effects of her tough three set win over Christina McHale, and enters this match as the massive underdog.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, with Sofia Kenin leading the head to head 1-0. She won a tough three setter at the 2018 US Open, but I don’t think that will be the case here. I expect Kenin to be more dominant here, and she should win this in straight sets. She is not yet comfortable on the grass, but neither is her American opponent who is also going to be fatigued after being pushed to 10-8 in the third set in her opening round match. Sofia Kenin may not be a true contender for the title here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships but I expect her to win here over Madison Brengle and advance to the Third Round.
