TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, June 29th 2021.
Will Jan-Lennard Struff cause a big upset right from the start here at Wimbledon as he aims to knock out the 2nd seed Daniil Medvedev? Will Daniil Medvedev continue riding on the momentum gained in his successful week at the Mallorca Open last week? Both players are capable of making this match a very entertaining and tight one, but only one will make their way to the Round of 64 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Jan-Lennard Struff did not have a good week last week at the Mallorca Open, losing in the Round of 32 to Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 6-7/3-6. Jan-Lennard Struff is a hit or miss player nowadays, being able to compete with some big name players on his day, but also losing to nobody’s on other days. Jan-Lennard is a huge server and he has a big forehand, which should help him on grass. I think that his good game on this surface when he is at his best, as well as the fact that he beat Daniil Medvedev only 2 weeks ago on grass at the Halle Open in straight sets 7-6/6-3, will give him some confidence coming into this match at Wimbledon.
Medvedev bounced back from his bad start to the grass season in Halle but then bounced back at the Mallorca Open last week by winning the title. Daniil Medvedev is a good player for this surface, and he will want to show everyone that he should be considered a title favourite when all the attention is on Djokovic and Federer. Daniil Medvedev has a tough side of the draw and he knows that if he is not at his best from the start, he will have to fight even harder. However, Medvedev in Grand Slams does not joke around, and after his strong run at Roland Garros earlier in the month, I am sure he will come out confidently against Jan-Lennard Struff.
Daniil Medvedev and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 6 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 4-2. They met 2 weeks ago on grass where Struff won in straight sets 7-6/6-3. Although Struff won that match, Medvedev will be seeking for revenge here, especially as this is actually an important tournament. Daniil Medvedev will come out here after his successful week in Mallorca to give it his best and make his way to the Round of 64 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. It will be tight at moments, and I think Struff’s power can get him 1 set, but that’s it.
